Face of Mexico: The Mask Museum
Tucked into the Colonia Azteca neighborhood of San Miguel de Allende, Another Face of Mexico is a private museum devoted to Mexico’s rich tradition of ceremonial masking. Owner and curator Bill LeVasseur has spent more than 25 years traveling to remote indigenous communities across Mexico, documenting masked dance ceremonies and building an extraordinary collection of over 500 authentic masks — every one of which has been danced in ritual before finding its place on display. Alongside the masks, the museum features photographs, video, and firsthand accounts covering more than 40 distinct dance traditions, offering visitors a rare window into a living, centuries-old art form. Bill and his wife Heidi opened the museum to the public in 2006, and all proceeds support a local children’s charity in San Miguel de Allende.
Join us for a welcome-back cocktail evening as Bill shares stories from decades spent in the field — the ceremonies, the artisans, and the meaning behind the masks — in the intimate setting of the collection itself.
