Dr. Kara Fitzgerald is a prominent figure in epigenetics and longevity, focusing on how diet and lifestyle interventions can potentially reverse biological aging. Her research examines the impact of these interventions on the DNA methylome.
Her influential study, published on April 12, 2021, in Aging, demonstrated that an 8-week DNA methylation-supportive diet and lifesatyle could potentially reverse biological age in middle-aged men. A follow-up study, published on March 22, 2023, in the same journal, suggests that similar benefits may extend to middle-aged women.
Dr. Fitzgerald conducts her research at the Helfgott Research Institute, where she explores targeted diet and lifestyle practices. She has authored the book Younger You and a companion cookbook, Better Broths and Healing Tonics, and offers personalized Younger You Programs based on her findings.
She earned her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in nutritional biochemistry and laboratory science at Metametrix Clinical Laboratory under Richard Lord, PhD. Dr. Fitzgerald is the lead author and editor of Case Studies in Integrative and Functional Medicine. As a faculty member at the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and an IFM Certified Practitioner, she lectures globally on functional medicine, longevity, and epigenetics. She also hosts the award-nominated podcast New Frontiers in Functional Medicine and maintains an active blog at www.drkarafitzgerald.com. Her clinical practice is based in Sandy Hook, Connecticut.
